Pasifika Fusion is a community education initiative. The event is over two days and where Secondary Schools are invited to highlight their students Pacific cultures as well as showcase their academic abilities. We have culture, speech, talent, debate, quiz, poetry, essay, drama, cinematography, wearable arts, science and visual arts categories.
Pasifika Fusion works alongside other groups to inform students and families of career paths. We have also worked with many governmental organisations to promote a safer and healthier community as well as other Educational institution, for example, Massey University, Auckland University, Victoria University, UCOL and more.
Pasifika Fusion encourages Pacific students to attempt at academic subjects in a safe environment where they are encouraged and supported by their peers, teachers, Schools, families, and the wider community. Pasifika Fusion enables communities to work together with the school building positive relationships between all parties involved. Developing a community that promotes identity, culture, and contribution.
Pasifika Pride Educators committee (aka Pasifika Fusion) was formed in 1999. Initiated by four volunteers (registered teachers) they saw a need for our Pacific children in Palmerston North.
In 2000, Pasifika Pride Educators committee began a holiday programme, with an overwhelming 114 students registered. The holiday programme was steered by teachers and supported by local church communities. This led to a three day a week Homework Centre where parents volunteered their time and contributed to workshop discussions. Out of the discussions (involving parents and students), they wanted to address some issues. This was the catalyst that set up many initiatives for the promotion of the Pacific languages and cultures to ensures the holistic development of the child. With the growing popularity of children wanting to identify with their cultural heritage this encouraged Pacific Educators to organise a Pacific Cultural Festival for the Secondary School students - Pasifika Fusion.
